Minard
This is based on a famous map by Charles Joseph Minard.
It shows the size of Napoleon’s forces during his invasion of and subsequent retreat from Russia in 1812.
It is one of the most famous data visualizations in history.
Tolstoy
This contains an excerpt from the first chapter of the Russian text of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace.
In it, characters from the Russian aristocracy discuss Napoleon, Austria, and politics of the early 19th century.
Russian aristocrats of that era would apparently switch between French and Russian within a single conversation. Tolstoy does so here as well.
