In October 2016 we launched mykeyboard.eu, an online store offering Mechanical Keyboards. It was my personal frustration with the lack of quality mechanical keyboards in Europe that drove me to do something about it. It didn’t need much thinking to understand that the problem was mainly a localization problem because every country in Europe has its own keyboard layout. Not only does each layout differ in the position of its letters and symbols, they also come with their own variations and can be based on either the ISO or ANSI physical layout.
We started contacting vendors in April 2016 to get keyboards produced without keycaps. This would allow us to order and stock ISO and ANSI layout keyboards without having to stock all models for each country. Keycaps are then ordered separately which allows customers to mix and match a keyboard with a set of keys in the language they prefer.
Using this strategy we have found a solution to support not only the common ISO layouts such as UK Qwerty and German Qwertz but also language layouts such as Azerty BE, Azerty FR, Spanish Qwerty, Czech Republic Qwertz with even more layouts coming in the future.
